Design Supervisor

Basic Function/Job Overview:
The Design Supervisor is responsible for effectively leading the design team to create technical drawings and specifications for clients and other internal departments in accordance with company standards. A major focus of the position is responsibility for managing, coordinating, scheduling and overall integration of millwork design standards and similar technical activities in the design department. Duties also include directing, reviewing and/or approving all project design, engineering standards, and procedure changes. Participation in the development, application and continuous improvement of engineering standards is also a key element of this job function. He/she is also responsible for demonstrating Company Cabinetry’s commitment to leadership and coaching for development of team members. A successful candidate will have strong leadership and technical skills; including expertise in the setup, use, and standardization of CAD software, and a strong knowledge of millwork construction, production, and installation principles.
Primary Job Responsibilities
- Interpret drawings, specifications, and other documentation to determine the scope of work and effectively schedule resources
- Facilitate standardization of design processes
- Manage and sustain the application of engineering standards
- Provide leadership and development for design team
- Engage, assist, and encourage team members to train, supervise and ensure they are involved in continuous improvement activities in all areas of the facility
- Approve and/or modify product drawings, layouts, sketches and diagrams
- Maintain and facilitate open communication with project management, production, and installation teams as needed to ensure continuous improvement and understanding of drawing details
- Assume the roles and responsibilities of a product designer based on business needs
- Monitor project status during design and planning stages
- Direct recruitment, placement, and evaluation of design team
- Complete other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Proficiency with CAD and Microsoft Office software
- Good working knowledge of Company Cabinetry’s products, services, and manufacturing
- Strong understanding of drafting and design principles, standards, and terminology
- Ability to read and develop blueprint-type drawings
- Basic knowledge of layout, shop drawing and construction drawing principles
- Demonstrated organization skills and ability to work effectively with repeated interruptions and priority changes
- Excellent time management skills
- Good ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals across the organization levels in person, by telephone, and in writing
- Strong knowledge of management and leadership techniques and principles.
- Ability to coach team members with support to ensure alignment with the Company Cabinetry Lean vision and all policies and procedures
- Courage and ability to make decisions that drive continuous improvement
- Strong understanding of team member leadership and supervising techniques
Desired Knowledge and Skills:
- Demonstrated effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills and good knowledge of woodworking manufacturing quality improvement processes
- Knowledge of Job Management and Planning software
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Cabinet Vision Solid software and other CAD design software
- Effective problem solving skills
- Computer proficiency
- Basic knowledge of cost accounting principles
Desired Experience, Training, or Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field
- Five or more years experience with custom commercial millwork and casework design, construction and installation
- Demonstrated leadership experience
- Experience using Lean manufacturing principles in an environment of continuous improvement
- At least 5 years hands-on experience in drafting layouts, shop drawings, and construction drawings for millwork and casework
*Will have the primary responsibility for scheduling/assigning jobs to the engineers. This is a very key position within the company. Must have a proven work history, demonstrated leadership skills, etc.
